Gorgeous Picture – DVI Cable Sold Separately

I purchased this monitor to go along with a Mac Mini (mid-2011 model) and I am overall pleased with it. Here’s the 411:

Pros:
- Excellent picture (needed no tweaking out of the box).
- 1080p looks spectacular!
- Integrated speakers (yes they sound tinny, but I didn’t want external speakers taking up space on my desk).
- Matte screen (no glare or reflections in a room with lots of windows/daylight).
- Works with a Mac Mini without hassle… truly plug-n-play.
- Deliciously uniform LED backlighting.

Cons:
- No DVI cable in the box.
- Description here on Amazon doesn’t tell you there is no DVI cable in the box. Even the instructions that come with the monitor make you *think* there should be a DVI cable included, but if you read the exterior of the box, in very small print, it tells you only one video cable is included (a standard RGB). Heck, the ViewSonic website fails to indicate that a DVI cable is sold separately.
- Stand is steady and solid enough, but jiggles a bit if the desk is bumped.

The lack of a DVI cable is probably why this monitor is ~$20 less than other monitors. If using with a Mac Mini, get one of these: BlueRigger High Speed HDMI to DVI Adapter Cable (6.6 Feet/ 2 Meters)

I’d give this monitor 5 stars if the description were updated to make it manifestly clear that a DVI cable is not included.

Excellent Monitor for great price

I originally ordered 2 of these for my workstation at work and found these monitors to be awesome… After using them for about 3months I had to replace the single 24″ monitor I had at home with 2 of these… These are just superior to all the other monitors I have used and perform far beyond what you would think by the price.

Fantastic!

I bought this monitor with some high hopes. It would be my first flat panel monitor and it would be the first and highest definition monitor I own. What I can say about this monitor are only great things so far. The picture and colors are very vibrant and clear. Video looked very good (even if it wasn’t recorded at the highest quality).

Very easy to connect with the DVI-D and VGA ports. It took me about a minute to get everything set up.

Widescreen-but thats what i prefer.

Not much else to say. It was a very good buy and would possibly get a second for a dual-monitor setup.

Nice Monitor

Attached Monitor to Laptop and it looks great. No dead pixels. Can rotate screen 180, haven’t had a need for it yet, but looks like it could hold two browser windows vertically. Had tried an Acer 22in and the Viewsonic looks and feels like it is made better. I was thinking bigger than 24″ might be nice, but going bigger than 24″ would now seems it would be too much screen for the eyes if the monitor is on a desk. Nice upgrade, a little pricey, but looks to be a safe bet.

Excellent monitor…….a VFM product.

It has been 8 months since i have bought it, am completely satisfied with it. Screen is Matte , crisp and comfortable to eyes. Built is good.
I use it to extend my laptop screen, for coding and movies. It has dvi, vga and usb ports, In-built speakers are useless though, but one shouldn’t expect decent speakers on monitors, nevertheless i use studio cans (nothing can beat them). Rotation is nice feature, though i havent used it much, swivel is smooth. One thing i miss in it, as moving from samsung to viewsonic is the presets of brightness and color themes, for reading/coding and movies you need different brightness and contrast settings, which in samsung can be changed just by a button click.

Update Oct/10/2011:-
After an year of super heavy use, I must say is is working flawlessly for any kind of use be it multimedia or normal pc stuff, and colors are even better than hd my super glossy laptop screen (MSI GT680R), reflections on which gives me headache. I have compared both glossy and matte, and trust me Matte is best for eyes if you are reading for long say 5+ hours.
I bought PS3 this week, and it shows display through (hdmi–>dvi cable) and on 1080p , though its nowhere mentioned on manual or product site, but this monitor is hdcp compatible (sweeeeeet), folks you can play your blue-ray content on this as well. Keep in mind there is no way to get hdcp HD on screen if your display doesn’t support it.

I guess this one wont allow me to buy any new screen in near future, one of my friend told from his 6+ year experience viewsonic products last damn too long.

Great for 2nd car or travel

I ordered this for an odd reason. I was away on a business trip. I had remembered to pack my Garmin 755T unit Garmin nüvi 755T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator and the lighter socket power cord. However, I had totally forgotten the windshield mount. “No problem”, I thought, “I’ll just toss it on the dash.” Well, there are a bunch of problems with that.

* The GPS flew all over the dash whenever I took a turn or hit a bump
* There’s no way to plug the power cord into the GPS without this unit

I expected the first problem, but not the second. So I ordered this and had it shipped overnight to my hotel. Amazon came through and I had the mount the next morning. Works great!

If you have a 2nd car, this makes the transfer somewhat easier. If you also get a 2nd power cord to go with it, you’re really golden. You can then just pop the GPS out and in with zero effort.

Garmin 700 Series Suction Cup Mount

This mount fits and works as advertised. Instead of attaching the mount to the windshield leaving a tell-tale suction cup mark for would-be thieves, the enclosed self-sticking plastic mounting circle works well to attach to the side of my dash column, allowing for an unconspicuous, comfortable positioning and secure display of the GPS without a dangling power cord. Easy to attach and unattach and small enough to store neatly in glove compartment.

Well worth the minimal investment. Highly recommend.

charging issues

I’ve used this GPS for several weeks now and when it is fully charged it is absolutely great. The voice is loud and clear, the maps are accurate and detailed. It acquires satellites quickly, even in less than optimal circumstances with trees overhead or tall buildings nearby. It is easy to program and the onscreen menus are convenient. It is thin and reasonably light and portable and the screen is big. But it has one major problem: the cigarette-lighter charging system does not supply enough current to charge the GPS while it is turned on. It is unbelievable that Garmin would allow their unit to be sold under these conditions.

Mostly Impressive – But Some Quibbles

Overall, I am very satisfied with the Garmin nuvi 1350 but I do have a couple of minor complaints.

First of all, I do recommend that owners/potential buyers visit the Garmin web site to read through all of the product information and to review the FAQs. Some folks have made an issue of Garmin not including the USB cable with the device but this did not matter to me. The required cable is a standard type “A” to mini “B” USB cable. Many other devices use this same cable and I already own a couple of them. (I also heard that if you contact Garmin customer service, they may send you a cable at no charge.) Other reasons to visit the Garmin site: to register the product, to download the full PDF manual and to install the “my Garmin Agent Plugin” for web updates.

Next, my quibbles:
When the 1350 is plugged into a charging device (PC or vehicle), there is no way to determine when the unit is fully charged. This is very inconvenient. To view the charge level, you have to unplug the device and turn it on. Only then can you see the battery level. According to the Garmin FAQs, charge time is about 4 hours using the vehicle cable and 8 hours using the PC cable.
One of the features of the 1350 is the speed limit display. However, I find this to be of limited value. The speed display is frequently 5 to 10 mph too high compared with the actual posted speeds on the roads being traveled. As a result, this throws off the estimated destination arrival time.

Finally, why I am impressed:
When driving with the 1350, I never had any doubt where I was at any given time and I never had any doubt what my next maneuver would be (and isn’t this the bottom line of any GPS?). The voice commands have plenty of volume, are easy to understand and they also give you adequate lead time for upcoming turns. The commands will also repeat but the voice is not annoying. Several times, I deliberately missed a turn to test how the 1350 would respond. It quickly calculated a revised route based on my current location.
I also found the screen to be clear and easy to see while driving (in bright sun, shade and at night).
The full manual states that a PDA type stylus can be used for the touch screen. I found this to be convenient (I’m actually using a stylus from a Nintendo DS.) While you can certainly use your finger on the screen, this will leave fingerprints and smudges on the screen.

Other notes:
I have the 1350 sitting on my dash with the Garmin “Portable Friction Mount” – highly recommended.
My 1350 came with a free case – the Caselogic MGPS-2. This case adequately protects the 1350 when it’s not being used.

Overall, this has been a great purchase for my business travels and I would rate the unit as four and a half stars.

Garmin USB Data Card Programmer

This USB card interface provides a method of programming a Garmin data card to exchange infomation between your computer and the GPS unit and to install software updates for your Garmin GPS. It installs easily and works great. I now have detailed map info on a 32mb data card installed in my Garmin GPSMap 178c GPS/Sounder. It is great.

Not compatible with normal SD cards

Not all SD cards are the same! Please be aware that SD memory cards and Garmin SD Data Cards are totally different animals. Even though Garmin’s website shows that you can use micro SD cards with SD adapter in a particular GPS, that is different than a Garmin SD Data Card.

Otherwise I’m sure that for the right application, this is a great device!
