I was confused initially as to what I actually needed when I borrowed a family’s monitor to attach to my MacBook Pro.

There seems to be several kinds of DVI cables available. Apple supplies a VGA-DVI adapter that would attach to the supplied VGA cable that comes with the monitor. I searched for hours here on Amazon as well as Google as to what was actually needed. I counted the pins and made an educated guess that the plug advertised here was the one that was needed, despite the seemingly legitimate reviewer complaints that the vendor (or Amazon?) was misrepresenting the product.

The product sold here is an 18-pin, 6′, DVI cable (male to male), but the headpiece (the end pieces) is a cream-color not black. Nevertheless, it fits in perfectly to my MacBook Pro and to the external Compaq WF 1907 19″ monitor.

great DVI-D cable, it fits my monitor and my graphic card very well. There is no reason to go for a more expensive one, especially if you use a digital signal (which DVI is) where the attenuation of the signal doesn’t do any harm to the image as long as it doesn’t attenuate the whole signal.

Incredible Monitor, Incredible Value

The monitor is spectacular and very much exceeded my expectations. I went for this monitor as I was hoping that they fixed some of the issues with their highly reviewed older series from 23″ on up. ASUS hit this one out of the park. The design is a major improvement over the older 27″ with the wide bezels and flowery design on the speaker grill at the base of the monitor frame. ASUS has removed 1″ or so off the bezel width, which is nice for dual/eyefinity/matrox/surround setups. The new one has image quality much higher than other TN models that I have owned in the past. It is very well calibrated out of the box, but a little too bright for my tastes, needed to turn down the brightness settings. The speakers are nothing to brag about, but they are there hidden away and work just fine. The colors are completely consistent throughout the monitor as well. The monitor can be viewed at all angles and it seems the color or image stays consistent, even while looking at it from off to the side 70+degrees from being centered.

I would highly recommend this monitor to those on a budget who want a fast TN model without the lag/input delay or cost of an IPS monitor. I have returned monitors in the past for having bad colors / blurriness / viewing angles, but this one is definitely at the top of my list for TN panels in the larger 24″+ size range. I received it with 0 dead pixels, but I went through Amazon just in case as they are top notch at customer service.

Good monitor, Crappy Stand

Apparently everything in this coveted 27 inch range skimps on the stand to save money.
As for this monitor, it has a lot of inputs, good response time and looks great. I’ve heard a few complaints online for the input switching etc. But for a nice monitor with no frills that’s gaming worthy, it’s pretty great.

Good color, easy on the eyes.

My only complaint is that it’s very low to the base and there’s no way to raise it. It only tilts and it’s a bitch to tilt, you can barely tilt it if you want to and it’s simply TOO low on my desk I have to look down at it, which looks a little weird viewing angle-wise. So prepare to prop this up on a book or something. If you have an elevated spot for the monitor it could be perfect.

This one seemed better than a lot of the other 27 inch monitors, which also get bashed for their crappy stands, but besides that, nothing to complain about so far, I’ve had it a few months with no issues.

I didn’t want to hate you! I swear!

I pride myself in very rarely having any issues with items I purchase due to my thorough research based upon professional and consumer reviews. So far this has left me with very few product issues throughout my life… until now.

First let me start off by stating that 1) I work in the computer industry 2) I’m a gamer and hardcore PC user 3) I only make purchases with positive reviews 4) I own an ASUS product that I love and couldn’t live without (Eee PC 1005 netbook) and 5) Despite utilizing everyone else’s reviews, I’ve never given back to the community by reviewing my product… well that is about to change.

So how could I go wrong with 4 ½ out of 5 stars with 5 reviews on Amazon (at my purchase time), countless EXTREMELY positive reviews on that “newer” egg site, and coupled with the fact that I own an ASUS product and it has worked wonders for me?

Well I could go wrong by buying this monitor and I’m now on my third (second from Amazon) monitor which is currently packed up ready to ship back.

First monitor I purchased worked despite a significant amount of light bleed and so I returned it to the brick and mortar store because I thought I might get a monitor with less light bleed and Amazon was SOOOO much cheaper, especially in California where you have to pay a hazard fee of $16 on top of taxes and donate your first born to the State (I made that last part up… for now).

What a mistake that was, or maybe a blessing in disguise in the long run to avoid future problems?

The first monitor I got from amazon actually had significantly less light bleed then that from the brick and mortar store, had no dead pixels, and worked fine despite being delivered via UPS in a box that looked like it had fought in Vietnam or more likely tied via rope to the back of the UPS truck and dragged to my house for 10 miles. About 3 weeks later, during work, the monitor turned off. Before you freak out and ask did I try a new cable, or perhaps video drivers, etc.? Yes I tested it all and my second monitor on hand worked fine with the same DVI cord, power cord, power on, bla bla.

The display ports… all of them weirdly enough… decided to die. So I promptly called Amazon and they offered to send a new monitor out and gave me a shipping label which I promptly slapped on that monitor and sent away.

New monitor (second from Amazon) arrived and set it up and turned it on and “Holy dead and stuck pixel batman”. The left side of the screen looked like someone had keyed my monitor’s pixels and then for good measure they decided to sprinkle stuck red and green pixels all over the left-bottom half of the screen for jolly good Christmas measure. There are also several grouped dead pixels on the top edge of the screen as well although less “in your face”.

About ¾ of the red and green pixels have now gone unstuck after running countless programs to aid in that issue but the dead pixels remain, obviously, as they are dead and not just stuck. The backlighting is also horribly uneven. Use a plain background as your screen saver, such as red, and the top is dark red and the bottom is light pink.

Sigh… back she goes and I’m done with ASUS.

While I package this baby up, I’m writing from my P2770H monitor which typically I think this current brand is overpriced and overrated but it’s working GREAT and looks, in my aesthetic opinion, much sleeker and performs so much better. Yes the brightness on the Samsung is like staring into the sun, but you can easily turn that brightness down.

Frustrated as I must be to be that one out of a million guy that not only got one bad monitor, but three, I must regretfully have to rate this monitor very low.

So final suggestion? It’s Buy at your own risk knowing that most are happy and perhaps I’m a fluke but maybe you will be too..

Great 3D gaming monitor

I had recently put together a gaming computer, but was stuck with a 17-inch 720p monitor I had received as a present 2 years ago. I couldn’t enjoy the full High-Definition experience my games were meant to display, so I decided to order a monitor. Seeing as I have had a wonderful experience with passive 3D televisions, I decided to order this 3D monitor. I ordered a few days before New Year’s day however, and Amazon was out of stock. Seeing as how other sellers were selling the monitor for much more than amazon was selling it, I decided to “reserve” one so that it would be purchased as soon as amazon had it in stock. After two days, amazon was finally stocked with it, and the order had gone through. I received it much sooner than I expected too. The box it was
shipped in was slightly crushed in one corner, but the box inside holding the monitor was in perfect condition. Everything in the description was present with no missing cables or parts. The passive 3D lens clip-on is really useful for people who wear glasses and don’t want to wear two pairs to be able to experience 3D. The passive 3D glasses I received were slightly scratched in one lens, but not enough to prevent me from using it. Tridefignition runs games in spectacular 3D. Not every game is supported, however, but those that are leave me amazed. My display has finally become a window to a completely different world, whether or not I like it. The Tridef community is helpful in getting more games supported through the use of custom profiles that can be changed when accessing the profile in-game. I was able to get Audiosurf working correctly to suit my needs, after downloading a game profile made by another tridef user in the tridef community and adjusting it to work with the monitor. Not all games work with tridef, however, but playing them in 2D on this monitor is a blast! The two monitors that arrived to my house contained no dead pixels. I would definitely recommend this to my friends and family members.

LED greatness!!!

I ordered this item, off because I wanted a new LED monitor with HDMI to use with my pc and game consoles. Add in the 3D capability and I was sold instantly. The color, contrast, size(upgrade from 19 inch) and in full 1080p greatness!! 2D display quality is amazing! Far better than the standard HP monitor I was using. 3D display looks great as well, slight ghosting in some cases. Seems to work much better with the included TriDef software on the PC than playing games in 3D on PS3, which there is a noticeable loss in quality. Not a fault of the display, something that is necessary for the PS3 to push out 3D video. Overall great item, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great monitor and the occasional 3D fun.

Good monitor, but not a good 3D computer monitor

Executive summary: optimum 3D viewing distance is about 32″ (70 cm). Not good for computing. Also, scale the image so it fills the screen in order for 3D to work at all (I had graphics card issues). Audio is excellent.

This monitor might be wonderful as a console gaming monitor. As a 3D computer monitor – not so much. The product descriptions I read didn’t warn me about the viewing distance. I’m about 24″ from the screen while at the computer. At that distance you get two jumbled images, not 3D. It looks fine another foot or so back. Sadly, that’s not a good working distance when keyboard and mouse are involved.

My first thought when I unpacked this monitor is that it is weightless. Plugged it in and the picture is crisp and sharp. Nice. but then… why do I have such huge black borders around the picture? After much fussing with the controls, installing “display drivers” from the included CD (not necessary), etc. I finally found the “scaling option” control for my video card and set it to 0% underscan. This is an option I truly don’t understand because I’m using HDMI 1.4a. Shouldn’t the card handle this? Oh well, it’s an old rig with dual ATI 5830s.

Anyways, setting the overscan to 0 helped with some of the 3D issues because the left and right images must align with the monitor polarization stripes or passive 3D doesn’t have a chance of working. Luckily, I actually scanned through the 3D set-up sheet that recommended the 70cm viewing distance. So, I rolled the desk chair back and watched the included videos. Very nice for that.

Finally, the audio is pretty good. It can be improved with a subwoofer, but my desk doesn’t have those little speakers cluttering it up anymore. That’s good.

Regarding the stand – it sux. Can’t wait to use the VESA mount to bolt this thing to the wall. This is complicated by the HDMI and power sockets on the back. The plugs go straight back into the wall. I need to get 90 degree adapters so that the cords exit downward.

Three stars because someone else might enjoy this monitor as a viewing device for their gaming console -especially now that you can stream movies and stuff through those consoles. For me, this is a two star device because of the viewing distance and back panel sockets.

Excellent bang for your buck!

I got this card for my LG EnV2 so that I could put music on it as well as have more storage space for pictures, along with the option of printing pictures I take on my phone at a kiosk that accepts SanDisc cards (adapter needed), and it works perfectly! Don’t be alarmed if the product comes to your home in nothing but a bubble wrap envelope. Bulk packaging simply means that it doesn’t have plastic casing on it. In other words, it doesn’t have the retail packaging that you would see hanging on a store shelf at Wal-Mart.

If your device doesn’t read microSDHC cards, but you’re looking for a microSD card (non-SDHC) that holds more storage capacity than 2 gigs, then you won’t find it because such a card doesn’t exist. Any microSD card with storage capacity higher than 2 gigs is automatically going to be an SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) card. If you’re looking at any product detail of, say a phone, and in the details it mentions that it can have an external storage capacity of 8 gigs with a “microSD” card, then that device can certainly read SDHC, though product details don’t always mention that.

Quite Happy!

What can I say? It’s a tiny little MicroSD card with 4 GB of memory. It worked great on the first try with my HTC 8925 (AT&T Tilt) phone. It’s fast and the price was perfect.

I’m sure in six months everyone will have 20 GB cards for $50 each, but for the time being if your phone or camera supports MicroSD and SDHC then pick one of these up.

BTW: If you’ve never seen a MicroSD card, be prepared to be floored by its size. Think fingernail.

ENSURE YOUR DEVICE IS COMPATABLE!

I bought this for use with a Nokia 6085 cell phone, but the card is not recognized by the phone.

In fact, it wasn’t recognized by the built-in reader in my 6 month old laptop, either.

Upon contacting the supplier I was advised that cards higher in capacity than 2GB use a special format which is not usable by most devices, even laptops with integrated card readers, unless they specifically indicate that they can use the new SDHC (High Capacity) format.

Kudos to the supplier, as they don’t claim that it works with my phone; they shipped quickly and responded well to my email.

The problem was my lack of research into possible compatibility issues.

So, now you know. Don’t make the same mistake I did!

Garmin GPSmap 76CSx, Great GPS!

UPDATE: June 30, 2010 – This GPS is still great! Waiting on whether to update it to 2010.

UPDATE: September 4, 2008 – Still very impressed with the 76CSx unit. It has come in real handy recently shopping for a house. All my opinions stated previously are still current. One very handy feature the unit doesn’t have that I wish it did was the ability to choose an alternate route while your are traveling. This can come in handy in the event there is a detour or you want to calculate a route around a traffic jam. This would create a by-pass route on-the-fly. Many street specific GPS units can do this. Although, this unit can re-route if you go off course which is something different.

The ’2008 City Navigator Map Update’ is not much to be desired. I have not noticed any significant improvement in calculated routes or updated points of interest (POI) data over the 2007 maps release. The same errors that I have encounter initially are still there in the 2008 release(PA, NJ, NY areas). I am hesitant to purchase the 2009 update. I will probably wait until the 2010 Update.

The Foarm(R) case is the best protection out there still.

I am completely satisfied with this unit I have purchased & recommended other similar units by Garmin. Overall, the 76CSx is still a great unit.

UPDATE: August 23, 2007 – After reading reviews about the 2008 release of the Maps I decided to get. One special note: If you buy the update DVD make sure you get the correct release. For instance, if you have previously installed City Navigator North America v8 you need City Navigator North America 2008 UPDATE. If you own City Navigator North America v8 NT you need City Navigator North America 2008 NT. Get it? I found out the hard way but Garmin came through!

UPDATE: August 21, 2007 – A year has gone by and I still very much like my GPSmap 76CSx. Top notch!!! Garmin support has been great too. It’s been great on on the road, on the trails and even on a plane! Whether I am walking, driving or riding my bike. Actually, there isn’t much I would change on this GPS unit. The button placement you get accustomed to very quickly and the menu-page layout is genius. It’s been so easy to use this GPS. Once you read what each feature does the book really isn’t required anymore. Using the menus to get around to all the features and functions is easy and self-explanatory. Since my initial purchase, I have upgraded the expandable memory to 2GB (SanDisk microSD $22 on Amazon) and managed to fit the 48-states and some parts of Canada.

I see that there is a 2008 version of the North American maps replacing version 8. I am reluctant to purchasing this newer version since I have found quite a few out of date points-of-interests in the v8 maps. On a positive note, using the maps I have had many successful finds.

Battery life using Duracell alkaline batteries while the GPS is set to “Alkaline” will last about 12 hours. I have tried 2500mAh Energizer rechargable batteries with the GPS unit set to “NiMH” but I only seem to get about 3 hours of use out of them.

Recently, I have purchased a Garmin Nuvi 350 for my father from Amazon (price was great) and he really likes it but that unit is primarily for the road. Just what he wanted. The GPSmap 76CSx is loaded with so much more for so many other uses.

ORIGINAL review July 29, 2006 -
Having the Foarm rubber protective case has kept the GPS looking and functioning as new. It’s dropped a few times.
I highly recommend Garmin GPSmap76CSx unit to anyone looking for a GPS unit for the road, hiking and/or boating. The numerous menus and features are very intuitive and easy to use. The hi-res color screen may be small compared to in-car GPSs but is very clear. The time for the satellite lock is relatively quick. Even while indoors, I can get a lock on at least 3 or 4 satellites. Buildings with metal roofs or concrete floors above may not get any reception. This is expected of any unit.

For the road, I would highly suggest purchasing the City Navigator North American v8 Maps ($112). The map extends the features of the GPS with turn-by-turn directions, millions of points-of-interests (POI) such as fuel stations, garages, attractions, restaurants and shopping venues. You can even upload your own POIs to the unit as well. Don’t be surprised if some of the route calculations it comes up with seem a bit odd. It will get you there though. If you miss your turn it re-calculates a new route very quickly. There are numerous websites that provide POI files that you can upload to your unit. You will notice that some of the pre-installed POIs may not be up to date.

Unlike other handheld GPS units, the memory is expandable. I installed a 1GB microSD card ($45) in order to store vast amounts of map data or tracking that you may have done. The entire US is about 1.5GB of information. The unit comes with a blank 128MB microSD memory card that I moved to my cell phone (bonus).

The sensors included are the electronic compass and barometer. Having an electronic compass allows one to determine ones (N,S,E,W) direction without moving. Many GPS units determine direction by changes in position coordinates. Therefore you must be moving. Optional sensors such has for water temperature may be plugged into the back of the unit.

To protect your unit I recommend the Foarm textured, rubberized (~$20) case. The case comes with a few transparent protectors for the screen. If you don’t get this case go out and at least buy some PDA screen protectors. If the protected screen gets scratched you can peel off the overlay and stick on a new one. Since the screen is a bit small and with hi-resolution you want to keep it clear. The GPS unit floats with or without the case. That can come in handy while hiking or boating.

Based on all of this I would highly recommend any other Garmin unit as well.

The Cadillac of handheld GPS units

There are times when “pretty good” isn’t good enough. For me, purchasing a GPS unit represented one of those times. I wanted a handheld GPS unit that was best-in-class. My research led me to the GPSMap 76CSx. Factors that led to the decision: frankly, the reviews here; Garmin’s reputation; powerful satellite locking; great variety of base- and add-on maps; expandable storage via microSD card; altimeter; compass; battery life; transreflective LCD screen. Don’t underestimate the importance of the transreflective screen: one of the biggest consumers of battery power is the LCD: with the backlight on frequently, battery life drops significantly. The transreflective LCD enables you to turn off backlighting for use outdoors during the day, which significantly reduces battery draw.

I like to play with a unit before reading the manual, and in playing around I have figured out the major functions/features. It’s not the *most* intuitive unit, but I give it 4/5 stars on intuitiveness. The manual is not huge, but is a several-evening reading project, and that’s on my soon-to-do list.

Initial satellite locking is pretty quick (3-4), then acquisition of another 3-4 satellites occurs over the next several minutes. This is *indoors*, where I routinely lock 9 satellites in a townhouse. Out in the woods while hiking, I also lock and hold at least 9 satellites. The more satellites your unit can lock, the more accurate your coordinates are.

I started with using just the built-in basemap, which is … basic. The first map I added was Topo 2008 USA. While the resolution is only 100k, it adds a reasonable level of topographical detail for my uses (general light hiking), as well as non-routable local roads. (The roads appear and are labelled, but the unit cannot calculate turn-by-turn routing directions using the Topo map. For this, you must add one of the Navigator maps.)

The unit is light, and battery life so far seems as promised (15-20 hours). I have not tried rechargeable batteries, but plan to do so. If they work well, fine, and if not, fine too. Alkalines are inexpensive enough bought in bulk.

Downloading maps from the computer is quite a slow process, so I’m going to guess the USB is 1.1 not 2.0. I downloaded the mid-Atlantic and New England region, approximately 700k of data, which took over 45 minutes. I can’t imagine loading the whole country. The Navigator maps may be smaller, since I don’t believe they contain elevation data.

All in all, I am very pleased with this unit. The main things a potential buyer must be aware of is the need to add: 1) a larger microSD card to store additional map data; 2) the need to purchase better topographical maps for serious outdoor use; 3) the understanding that while Topo maps show roads, they do not calculate driving routes on these roads; 4) for routable driving maps, you have to add a Navigator type map.

The Next Generation…

Do not let the suggestion that this device is intended for marine use deter you from considering it for highway and recreational use on land. In fact, the waterproof and floating qualities of this device simply enhance its already impressive capabitities for hikers, bikers and motorized recreationists. It uses all varieties of MapSource software, providing the ability to use highway, topographic and marine maps.

The removable memory allows the user to increase memory or to create memory cards with chosen mapsets preloaded. I installed a 2 GB card and have every available MapSource map east of the Mississippi loaded, including parts of the Canada, Mexican isthmus, and Carribean World Maps! No longer do I have to sit and select maps corresponding to my next trip, load them to the device. Nor do I have to load map segments on my long trips during my trip (which required I bring my PC). It’s in there! It’s nearly as good as the DVD method found on today’s built in vehicle systems in terms of map storage.

It’s far better than vehicle systems in terms of features, portability, flexibility, and so on. There are no in-motion restrictions; all data can be uploaded and download with a computer; if the road is on a map, this GPS will take you there – no “road not verified mumbo-jumbo).

This marks the third Garmin GPS I have purchased. It has several capabilities that take it beyond the GPS V that I own, and puts the GPS12 (though a very fine device for it’s time) to shame. This unit has expandable memory, double the storage for waypoints, and over three times the track log memory. Tracks uploaded can be twice as large as the GPS V and three times as many total points.

The satellite reception is astonishing – it often receives enough satellites to give me coverage even sitting at my desk in my home office!

The addition of electronic compass and altimeter improve the usability and accuracy of an already impressive device. You will not regret owning one! If you already have a lesser Garmin mapping GPSr, take a look at this!
