If there ever was a product that failed to live up to it’s potential, the Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder was that product. Small, easy to use, YouTube friendly, and everyone is doing the video thing these days. The Flip Video got all kinds of media love from USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, and even Oprah used a Flip Video on her show. It’s veritably a outstanding idea whose time has come, and people are buying them up, in spite of all their problems. Speaking of their problems, lets have a look shall we.
Shooting videos with the Flip Video, and watching them on the camera seems to work fine. The problem comes once you attach the the video camera to your PC or MAC. Problems include intermittent uploading of videos. Meaning, at times videos upload and at times they don’t . Sometimes only a few will upload, and now and then none. In addition uploads may be painfully slow. Some buyers have reported finish computer crashes while attempting to load their videos. Even MAC users have seen their nearly bullet proof schemes crash when hooked up to a Flip Video. Pure Digital, the company behind the camcorder has been madly freeing software, and firmware updates for Flip Video. Some of the patches do seem to be helping.
The other thing to consider is the quality of the video you plan on creating. The Flip Video, in all probability produces quality more or less better videos than most cell phones, but not as good as the videos from a decent digital still camera. It seems to be geared to the YouTube crowd, as that’s regarding where the quality of the videos seem to fit. If your looking to shoot family and friends videos you want as keepsakes, it’s in all probability better to go with a devoted camcorder. If your only a casual video shooter, than perhaps you ought to spend a few extra bucks on your digital still camera, and make sure it’s got good video features.
I don’t mean to pick on the Flip Video too much, but there are a few other littler difficulties as well:
- Small size of unit may be cumbersome for people with larger adult size hands.
- Interface is not as simple to use as it will have to be.
- Customer service unable to keep up due to the popularity of the camera, and a heap of software problems.
- Lens quality and placement make it prone to scratching.

This Battery Rocks the house! By Paul J. Mcclure Just got this for my Samsung Fascinate (Verizon) phone. I love the big, bright screen on this phone, but it can kill a battery in less than a day. So, I figured, why be forced to hunt down a micro usb cable, a computer, or a wall outlet every time you need just a little extra juice….this is the perfect solution. It is fairly small, I will either carry in my pocket or belt in situations when I think I may need some extra power. I was just out in a restaurant and my phone died, plugged this thing in and it powered right up and got over 50% charged in less than 1 hour. I plan on testing tomorrow to see how long I will be able to run my phone with just a full charge on the phone and this unit fully charged, I am thinking probably ~4 days, which will be a 400% increase in effective useable life of my awesome phone!!

Better than expected By D. Baril When I ordered this item it was listed as having 700 mA output. What I received instead was a product that is slightly reconfigured and has a 1000 mA output instead of 700. That means that in addition to working with my iPod touch and my MT4G it also now works with my iPad as well. This battery is an amazing value. 5000 mAh, 1000 mA output, dual charging ports, and less than half the price of similarly specced batteries. The only downside is that it doesn’t come with a charging unit (my old MT3G charger works just fine), and there are no instructions whatsoever. I was briefly tempted to take a star off for this, but the overall value of this battery, plus the fact that I received an upgraded model at no extra cost greatly outweigh those two minor negatives so it keeps it’s 5 star rating.
Btw, you have to turn the unit on to charge your device, and to turn it on or off simply press and hold the power button for a few seconds (pressing and releasing gives you a quick power check but doesn’t actually turn the unit on). There, that’s pretty much all you’d need instructions for, so as long as you have a USB charger hanging around you’re good to go. Order in confidence, this is a great value.

Good Emergency Back-Up By Caitlín Ní Chormaic I love my Galaxy phone, but not its short battery life. Some places I hike actually have cell phone reception, and I’d like to be able to use my phone in case of an emergency, so it was either get a spare battery or get an external battery, and I opted for this. Twenty bucks seems a small price to pay for having the use of my phone. I haven’t had to use it in an emergency, but I’ve tested it on my phone when I get the “battery low” notification, and it works fine. It’s easy to charge and seems to keep its charge for a while. It’s a little bulky to carry, but I knew that when I made this choice. It comes with all sorts of adapters, so I just put the battery and the appropriate adapter and cable in a small pouch, drop it in my pack, and feel that I’ve got a little extra measure of safety. Now for those places that get absolutely no cell reception . . .
